Alps 2001

In memory of Adam Jakóbek

In summer 2000 I got an offer of 2-years long postdoc contract at Physics Department of Technische Universität München. I took a leave of absence from my parent institute in Warsaw and in September 2000 I moved to Munich. First couple of months I was busy fixing life problems in the new place. Eventually, I started to have more time for excursions to mountains and other interesting places. Munich is incredibly well situated, basically in the center of the eastern part of Alps - closest mountains (Zugspitze chain) are not more than an hour of driving from the city. Since mid-June I started to go hiking in mountains (or sometimes diving in Croatia) almost every sunny weekend, often alone, sometimes with friends from Warsaw or Munich. All those excursions together made up for the most succesful tourist season in my life - I was on 18 summits, including all, apart from Mont Blanc, highest peaks in Alpine countries - Monte Rosa in Switzerland, Grossglockner in Austria, Zugspitze in Germany and Triglav in Slovenia. Together with Mont Blanc, where I have been two years earlier, I conquered kind of "crown of Alps".

Unfortunately, beautiful summer has been overshadowed by a tragedy - my friend, Adam Jakóbek, died struck by lightning on Monte Rosa summit. Even the most succesful season is not worth the human life, but it is not possible to push the time back and revert what had happened. Let at least this page remains dedicated to his memory.

Below I enclose relations from my various excursions. The text is currently written in Polish only, but I invite everybody to see at least the photos, some of them are really nice!
