Diving in Egypt

Sharm-el-Sheikh, 3-10.01.2004

At the beginning of January 2004 my girlfriend, Kasia Radkiewicz, and me went for a week long diving excursion to Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt. The opportunity was excellent - just after the New Year very few people can and want to travel, so hotels in holiday resorts stay half-empty and prices are quite low. We accepted the "last minute" offer of our friend "Victoria" Magda Budzyńska (also a diver), owner of the "Victoria Travel" agency, and flew to the Red Sea Riviera.

The excursion appeared to be very succesful. We went to Egypt with a group of more than ten other Polish divers, enough to rent the whole boat just for us and to decide about the choice of diving sites. Actually, we encountered some unexpected problems - several hours before our arrival, Egyptian Boeing carrying mostly French tourists had crashed just after starting from Sharm. Due to the rescue operation and search for the remnants of the plane, coastal waters around the town were closed for couple of days, so we had to sail to more distant reefs. We needed more time to get to them, but diving became even more interesting than it could be near the crowded beaches of Sharm. After all, we couldn't complain.

During 6 days of our stay we did 14 dives, 12 on coral reefs (including 2 night dives) and 2 on the famous wreck of SS Thistlegorm (the complete list can be found in my divelog). For Kasia it was her first adventure with diving in tropical waters. I myself dived already in Egypt (in Hurghada) few months earlier, but that time I didn't have yet an underwater case for my Nikon camera - current trip was my first serious attemp in underwater photography. Unfortunately, I still didn't have underwater flash, so all my photos are in bluish colours. Nevertheless, I was quite happy with the results - at least several pictures I consider to be quite interesting. Below I am presenting the gallery of photos taken during the trip and some commetary - the latter unfortunately only in Polish.
