Physics and Technology of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a multinational effort hosted by Fermilab to address some of the biggest open questions in particle physics, particularly whether charge-parity symmetry is violated in neutrino oscillation. DUNE will make precise measurements of the parameters governing long-baseline neutrino oscillation by observing an intense neutrino beam with a near detector complex onsite at Fermilab and a massive, underground, far detector located ~1300 km away at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. DUNE will also be sensitive to supernova burst neutrinos and signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model, including baryon number non-conservation. In this seminar, I will describe the simulation-based analysis of DUNE's sensitivity to long-baseline neutrino oscillation, supernovae and BSM phenomena. I will introduce DUNE technology, including the new neutrino beamline, far detector modules design and the near detector complex. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84516096743?pwd=a3BYQ24zY1ZjQTF4eFIwUnM2WlNaZz09 (Meeting ID: 845 1609 6743; Passcode: HEP_UW)

Vector Boson Scattering as a gate to New Physics

In the lack of direct observation of new particles at the LHC, indirect searches for physics beyond the Standard Model gain new importance. Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) processes provide crucial tests of the Standard Model mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and allow for indirect searches for New Physics. After a pedagogical introduction to the physics of VBS, I will present the concept of BSM searches in the quasi-model-independent framework of effective field theories, their current status and future plans. I will give a review of recent VBS-related results from the LHC Run 2 data collected by the CMS experiment and selected advances in theory and phenomenology. Poszukiwania cząstek długożyciowych przez CMS

Searches for long-lived particles at CMS

Models beyond the SM predict new particles with a wide range of lifetimes. The weak-scale particles can get a long lifetime which lead to unconventional signatures in the detector with respect to these from prompt decays, often requiring customized techniques to trigger and identify them. The CMS experiment at the LHC collider puts a growing effort to expand the reach for long-lived signals. During the seminar, recent studies on long-lived particles will be shown. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84516096743?pwd=a3BYQ24zY1ZjQTF4eFIwUnM2WlNaZz09 (Meeting ID: 845 1609 6743; Passcode: HEP_UW)

Krzysztof Mekala: "Heavy Neutrinos at Future Linear e+e- Colliders"With the Standard Model being unable to describe the observed baryon asymmetry or dark matter density in the universe, many models of the New Physics introduce heavy neutrino species as a possible explanation for these effects. Dirac or Majorana neutrinos with masses above the EW scale could be produced at future linear e+e- colliders, like the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) or the International Linear Collider (ILC). We studied the possibility of observing production and decays of heavy neutrinos in qql final state at the ILC running at 500 GeV and 1 TeV, and the CLIC running at 3 TeV. The analysis is based on the WHIZARD event generation and fast simulation of the detector response with DELPHES. Dirac and Majorana neutrinos with masses from 200 GeV to 3.2 TeV are considered. Estimated limits on the production cross sections and on the neutrino-lepton coupling are compared with the current limits coming from the LHC running at 13 TeV, as well as the expected future limits from hadron colliders. Jan Klamka: "Search for the pair-production of charged IDM scalars at high energy CLIC"Compact Linear Collider is the next energy frontier e+e- collider proposed at CERN. Its goal is to precisely test Standard Model (SM) predictions, as well as directly search for the "new physics". One of the models predicting such phenomena is the Inert Doublet Model (IDM), a very simple extension of the SM scalar sector. It brings in four new particles, including one good dark matter candidate. CLIC sensitivity for discovery of the IDM scalars has been tested, considering 23 benchmark points in the model parameter space. Both fast and full detector simulation techniques were used, where Delphes model of the CLIC detector was extended to include background from gamma-gamma interactions, essential in this analysis. Study shows that IDM particles can be discovered at CLIC for most of considered benchmark points, with high statistical significance. Test of Lepton Flavour Universality at LHCb

The Standard Model of particle physics assumes that the interactions of the three charged leptons differ only because of their mass differences. Any deviation from this Lepton Universality Principle would suggest new kind of interactions or particles beyond the Standard Model.Precision tests of lepton universality have been performed over the years by many experiments. The recent studies of the LHCb experiment indicate evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a statistical significance of 3.1 standard deviations. In the talk the last results from the LHCb will be discussed in the context of previous and future measurements. Krzysztof Mekala: "CLIC sensitivity to invisible scalar decays" The Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) is a proposed TeV-scale high-luminosity electron-positron collider at CERN. CLIC will allow us to study the Higgs boson properties with very high precision. These measurements can also result in direct or indirect discovery of "new physics", Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) phenomena, which could help us to understand the nature of dark matter (DM). SM-like Higgs boson or new heavy scalar decays with emission of invisible DM particles can be the only way to observe "new physics" effects at achievable energy scales and establish connection between Standard Model and BSM sectors. We studied the possibility of measuring invisible Higgs boson and additional heavy scalars decays with experiment at CLIC running at 380 GeV and 1.5 TeV. We estimated the expected limits on the invisible decays of the125 GeV Higgs boson, as well as the cross section limits for production of an additional neutral Higgs scalar, assuming its invisible decays, as a function of its mass. Kacper Nowak: "Optimising top-quark threshold scan at e+e- colliders using genetic algorithm". One of the important goals at the future e+e- colliders is to measure the top-quark mass and width in a scan of the pair production threshold. However, the shape of the pair-production cross section at the threshold depends also on other model parameters, as the top Yukawa coupling, and the measurement is a subject to many systematic uncertainties.Presented is the most general approach to the top-quark mass determination from the threshold scan at CLIC, with all relevant model parameters and selected systematic uncertainties and constraints from other measurements included in the fit procedure. The top-quark mass can be extracted with precision of the order of 30 to 40 MeV already for 100 fb-1 of data collected at the threshold. Additional improvement is possible if the running scenario is optimized: with the optimisation procedure based on the genetic algorithm the uncertainty can be reduced by about 25%. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84516096743?pwd=a3BYQ24zY1ZjQTF4eFIwUnM2WlNaZz09 (Meeting ID: 845 1609 6743; Passcode: HEP_UW)

The KATRIN experiment: neutrino mass measurements with sub-eV sensitivity and future prospects

The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN) is searching for the signature of the neutrino mass in the endpoint region of the tritium beta-decay spectrum. KATRIN combines a high-intensity gaseous molecular tritium source with a high-resolution spectroscopy using electrostatic filter with magnetic adiabatic collimation to reach the target neutrino-mass sensitivity of 0.2 eV/c2, improving on the previous measurements by an order of magnitude. With the first science run of KATRIN the previous neutrino mass bounds were improved by a factor of two, with the first upper limit of 1.1 eV/c2 (90% CL).In this talk an overview of the KATRIN experiment and its very recent results are presented. Our preliminary new results reaching a sub-eV neutrino-mass sensitivity based on the whole 2019 data-set will be discussed. In addition, the talk reports on the KATRIN exploration of interesting BSM physics cases and closes with an outlook on the future prospects of KATRIN. Status of the ILC project and news from LCWS'2021

In recent years, momentum has been building for Japan to host the International Linear Collider (ILC). High-level discussions have taken place between the US and Japan, and also between European countries and Japan. 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics confirmed the need for a Higgs factory as the essential next step for particle physics and also expressed willingness of the European community to collaborate in the ILC. ICFA has taken a major step to focus on requirements to establish an ILC "Pre-Lab" in Japan by setting up the International Development Team (IDT). This team has the mandate to pave the way for an organisation that would be the precursor to an official ILC laboratory. News on the ILC project development and IDT activities have been just presented at the 2021 International Workshop on Future Linear Colliders (LCWS2021). The workshop covers physics, detectors, and accelerator issues related to the high-energy linear electron-positron colliders CLIC and ILC. Many activities of the Warsaw LC group have also been presented. Ultra-peripheral vector meson photoproduction in heavy-ion collisions in CMS

In this seminar I will present the first measurement of the total cross-section of the coherent ultra-peripheral photoproduction of the Υ meson in lead-lead collisions at 5.02 TeV. The data used in the analysis has been collected in 2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The considered channel is the muon decay of the Υ meson, Υ → μ+μ−. Future Circular Collider - The future of opportunities

The FCC-ee is a high-luminosity, high-precision e+e- circular collider. Two separate e+ and e- storage rings with very strong focusing, fed by a full size continuous injector, provide e+e- collision luminosities ranging from (per interaction point) 230 1034 /cm2 /s at the Z pole, 8 1034 /cm2 /s at the ZH production maximum (240 GeV) and 1.7 1034 /cm2 /s at the tt threshold and up to 365 GeV. Two to four interaction points are considered. The run plan of 15-20 years yields 5 10^12 Z bosons, 10^8 W pairs, 1.3 10^6 Higgs bosons and 10^6 top quark pairs. Thanks to the availability of transverse polarization, the energy calibration at 100 keV precision offers unprecedented precision for measurements of Z and W properties. The possibility of s-channel Higgs production at ECM=125 GeV is under study, giving unique access to the electron Yukawa coupling. These opportunities make the FCC-ee stand out among the other Higgs factory proposals.Especially at the Z run, considerable challenges await experimenters and theorists, for systematic uncertainties to match the extraordinary available statistical precision. Towards spin physics from Lattice QCD

In this talk, we will present recent directions in lattice QCD computations of nucleon structure, in particular for spin-dependent observables. We will provide a brief non-technical introduction to lattice QCD in general and to lattice methods that give access to the relevant physical quantities. Then, we will review selected results for spin-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs), including both their moments and their x-dependence. Finally, we will show the nucleon spin decomposition from the lattice in terms of contributions from valence/sea quarks and gluons. Towards identifying the sources of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

Even though the first UHECR was detected almost 60 years ago, the origin of these particles remains a mystery. For lower energies, their paths are twisted by the Galactic magnetic field, while for higher energies their fluxes are too low to give a statistically significant location on the sky. This is even though the largest observatories occupy hundreds to thousands of square kilometres. In this seminar, I will show two approaches to solving this problem. The first one is significantly increasing the volume of the atmosphere observed. This can be achieved either with covering tens of thousands of square kilometres with simple radio antennas, which is the aim of the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) experiment. Alternatively, UHECR induced fluorescent tracks in the atmosphere can be observed from the orbit, which is the idea behind JEM-EUSO and Poemma experiments. The second approach is to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos, unaffected by Galactic magnetic fields, created by the UHECRs close to their origin. This is, again, the aim of both GRAND and Poemma experiments. The Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope

High-energy neutrino astronomy is a fascinating new field of research, rapidly developing1over the recent years. It opens a new observation window on the most violent processes in the universe, fitting very well to the concept of multi-messenger astronomy. Constraining astrophysical neutrino fluxes can also help to understand the long-standing mystery of the origin of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Astronomical studies of high-energy neutrinos are carried out by large-scale next-generation neutrino telescopes located in different regions of the world, forming a global network of complementary detectors. The Baikal-GVD, being currently the largest neutrino telescope in the Northern Hemisphere and still growing up, is an important constituent of this network. This talk briefly reviews working principles, analysis methods and some selected results of the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope. KM3NeT/ORCA: status & perspectives for \nu oscillation and mass ordering measurements

A next-generation neutrino telescope, the Kilometer Cube Neutrino Telescope (KM3NeT), is currently under deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. Its low energy configuration ORCA (Oscillations Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) is optimised for the detection of atmospheric neutrinos with energies above ∼1 GeV. The main research target of the ORCA detector is the measurement of the neutrino mass ordering and atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters, while the detector is also sensitive to a wide variety of other physics topics, such as dark matter, non-standard interactions and sterile neutrinos. The presentation will provide an overview of the ORCA detector and introduce its research programme, alongside early analyses of data collected with the array in its current configuration. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84516096743?pwd=a3BYQ24zY1ZjQTF4eFIwUnM2WlNaZz09 (Meeting ID: 845 1609 6743, Passcode: HEP_UW)

Search for τ→μμμ Decay

Branching rations Br(τ→μμμ) have been studied in particular by BELLE, BABAR, LHCb, ATLAS and CMS. Obtained results should be compared with existing or future predictions on Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) of different Standard Model extensions. In this talk methods used by above experiments for data collection and analysis will be described and experimental results presented with particular emphasis on the CMS experiment. Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84516096743?pwd=a3BYQ24zY1ZjQTF4eFIwUnM2WlNaZz09 Meeting ID: 845 1609 6743, Passcode: HEP_UW

Top physics with the CMS experiment - selected results

The top quark is the heaviest object in the standard model (SM).It allows for the precise test of the SM and searches for a new physics. Thus the top quark measurements are important part of CMS physics program. In the presentation the selection of recent CMS top-quark measurements will be given:t-tbar production in association with charm, 3rd generation of CKM matrix elements, forward-backward asymmetry, top Yukawa coupling determination and a search for CP violation effects in top production.
