The Institute of Theoretical Physics consists of six chairs:
- Theory of Particles and Elementary Interactions,
- Theory of Hadrons and Leptons,
- Theory of the Structure of Atomic Nuclei,
- Quantum Optics and Atomic Physics,
- Condensed Matter Physics,
- Theory of Relativity and Gravitation,
the Laboratory of Computer Physics and the Library.

The research at the institute covers a broad spectrum of topics involving physical systems with various degrees of complexity:
- The phenomenological and formal problems in the theory of particles and elementary interactions are related to the standard model and its supersymmetric extensions, unification of interactions, theory of superstrings and supergravitation, substructure of quarks and gluons, nonperturbative methods in QCD and cosmological applications.
- The nuclei far from stability with low binding energy and those with high angular momentum are investigated, and self-consistent approach within the density functional theory is developed.
- Quantum optics, quantum information theory, QED and atomic physics are developed with emphasis on high precision tests of QED, properties of atoms in strong laser fields, and cold matter condensation.
- Another field of research includes quantum theory of semimagnetic semiconductors, semiconductor microstructures, and high Tc superconductors. Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical physics methods are applied to classical and quantum many particle systems with emphasis on surface phase transitions, critical phenomena, kinetic and transport theory.
-The research comprises also the structure of space-time, theory of gravitation and its possible extensions, in particular the formulation of quantum gravity. The relations between cosmology and theoretical astrophysics on one hand, and particle and nuclear physics on the other hand are investigated.

The Institute was headed successively by the directors: Leopold Infeld (1952 - 1966), Józef Werle (1966 - 1975), Andrzej Trautman (1975 - 1984), Stefan Pokorski (1984 - 1993), Stanisław G. Rohoziński (1993 - 2005), Marek Napiórkowski (2005 - ).
